Lessons with Bookman

In 2009, I was the lead script writer and video production manager for an edutainment web series for children. When our lead actor suddenly became unavailable, the executive team and I decided that I would fill in.

Little did I know, for the next 9 years, I would be squeezing into a unitard and filming as Bookman: a silly, bumbling superhero with a heart for books and reading.

Over the years, Bookman has been the host of numerous reading programs for PreK through 3rd graders. Tens of thousands of children have enjoyed his videos, interactive games, and online activities.

A program that introduces the most basic ingredients of phonics to pre-readers: phonemic awareness (recognizing individual sounds) and letter recognition.

We needed a fun way to introduce very young kids to each letter of the alphabet and decided songs with Bookman were the way to go. These lessons offer a balance of live-action video and interactive games and exercises.

Once kids review a letter's sound and the shape of its letter, they're ready to put it together into phonics. This is the final section of the sample lesson.
